Sandy completed his veterinary degree at Massey in 1990, and then was in rural mixed practice in Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury. Between 1998 and 2001 he completed a PhD in Veterinary Pathology at Massey. He had two years as a Veterinary Pathologist / Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, USA. From 2004 to 2008 he was a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at Murdoch University, Western Australia. Whilst there he gained membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and board certification in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Whilst well grounded in all mammalian species his bias is towards production animals.
