A key strategy over the past 12 months has been to reduce our reliance on outside referral labs and bring more tests in house. The motivation for this is twofold. Naturally, performing the tests ourselves provides a level of profitability that is not achievable in passing on the fee from another laboratory. 

Equally important is the improvement in service we can provide. The process of referral instantly adds to the turnaround time before we can issue results. Most commonly the referral is to another locality meaning 24 hours is added. When we look at cases where something goes wrong, the issue almost universally involves referral testing. The inclusion of another link in the chain has to introduce scope for error. 

We have actively encouraged clients to submit samples for referral tests directly to the provider where we know there is time pressure for results. It is important then that we make our clients aware of tests as we bring them in house. Recent additions to our range of tests include:
